What we do
We provide multiple trainings to empower local professionals in under-resourced communities and (post)conflict areas by equipping them with the knowledge, skills and tools to make a change in the lives of the kids and youth-at risk they work with.
Teacher training
Schools in under-resourced communities and (post)conflict areas can be ill equipped, which limits teachers in resources of offering adequate support to their students. In our teacher trainings we are not only providing teachers with skills and knowledge about teaching, basic counselling, trauma-support and self-care, but we also equip the schools with basic materials so they can actively work on creating a safer school environment.
In this 3-part cultural sensitive teaching techniques training local school teams will be provided with practical knowledge and tools to create a positive and lifelong impact on student learning. The training is highly practical and interactive, and is divided in (1) learning the essential classroom-environment techniques, (2) helping students with different kinds of learning techniques and (3) self-care for teachers techniques. The tools offered in this training are classroom tested and research-based, for a variety of grade levels and subject areas.
In this 5-part trauma-support training local school teams will be trained in how to be a trauma-supportive school system to help their (traumatized) students. Teachers will get a very practical and visual explanation about how trauma works in the brain and body, how to understand and recognize it in their students, and they will be provided with practical skills to work with traumatized children and youth. The goal of this training is to equip schools with the right tools so they can be a safe space for their students, in which the students can heal and develop in healthy ways.
In this training local school teams will be trained in how to provide education in emergency situations. Teachers will learn about issues related to emergencies; regarding child protection, safeguarding, gender, and cultural aspects. Teachers will be equipped with skills in how they can contribute to children's physical and psychological protection and wellbeing in difficult times, and learn different approaches in how to offer quality teaching and support for children, parents, and their community.
In this training local teachers will learn how to protect children from violence, exploitation and trauma. In this training we will explore together what can be done to protect children at risk, and how teachers can support them in their recovery. This training aims to empower teachers in how to recognize signs of abuse and neglect, how to use different strategies to foster resilience in children, and how to defend children's rights. Besides these practical skills teachers will gain knowledge and awareness on children’s rights violations.
Mental health training
These trainings are meant for local professionals or role models from any field that are working, or wanting to work, with children and youth at risk in under-resourced
communities or (post)conflict areas. These workshops and trainings focus on providing local teams with skills, tools and knowledge on how to best support vulnerable kids when it comes to trauma, preventing and protecting them in crisis, and how to practice self-care when providing psycho-social support in challenging circumstances.
In this training local professionals and role models will be trained in how to work in a trauma- supportive way to help the traumatized children and youth they work with. The first part of the training will focus on the basics of trauma-support, in which the trainees will get a practical and visual explanation of how trauma works and how to understand and recognize it.
The second part of the training will provide them with a more elaborate
understanding of trauma, and most of all will equip them with practical skills and tools to work with and support traumatized children and youth in any situation.
This training focuses on how to support people in the immediate aftermath of an extremely stressful event. The training covers strategies in providing support and practical help to fellow vulnerable human beings who are suffering from psychological or physical consequences of serious crisis events or conflict situations. The training is designed in a way that respects people’s culture, dignity and capabilities, so it can be implemented in multiple locations.

Intervention implementation
Train for Change helps organizations and schools with implementing new interventions, or finetuning and elaborating the existing ones. For all the interventions we can help implement, we offer a train-the-trainer workshop, so local teams are not only learning how to provide the intervention, but can also pass on their knowledge and skills to future team-members. The interventions we can help implement focus on processing trauma, prevention of gender based violence, and parent involvement. After receiving a training on how to implement the intervention, the trainees will also be provided with the materials to start implementing the intervention at their school or organization.
This training will prepare local rolemodels to work as a mental health coach. The basic principles of psychology will be taught, as well as how to support (traumatized) children and youth-at risk. Furthermore we will be practicing with communication skills, the essentials of how to work with kids, and how to provide mental health workshops.
In this training local mental health facilitators will learn how to implement and provide this intervention to groups of teenage-girls. This intervention focuses on obtaining insight into one's own problems and underlying patterns of dealing with emotions, stress, and social interactions. The intervention is meant for girls with (social) anxiety and depressive symptoms, identity problems, a negative self-esteem and difficulties with experiencing and sharing feelings. The aim of the intervention is to help girls deal with these difficulties and empower them.
In order to put a stop to Gender Based Violence (GBV) from happening it’s important to prevent it at the source. Therefore instead of teaching girls to adapt themselves to protect them from violence, we want to educate boys from a young age to act as protectors rather than bystanders or perpetrators. In this preventive intervention schoolboys will be taught the knowledge and tools to assist in prevention of gbv, and to change the existing mindset of boys about how to approach woman and sexuality. Local rolemodels and mental health facilitators will learn how to implement this intervention through this training.
When working with children and youth, trainees can achieve a lot by offering a safe space, helping kids to become more resilient and offer different kinds of tools and strategies to help them face difficulties. We can achieve even more with the active engagement of parents. We offer a training in how to involve parents simultaneously with the interventions.
